BANKEX expiry in 2026 falls on the last Thursday of each month, or the previous trading day if Thursday is a holiday. BANKEX has monthly futures and options contracts; weekly contracts are no longer available. The current lot size is 30 units. As of 11 September 2026, the next expiry is Thursday, 24 September 2026.

The current expiry schedule and index contract lot sizes support these specifications; the upcoming dates are listed below.

## BANKEX Expiry Dates and Schedule in 2026

As of 11 September 2026, the next BANKEX expiry is **Thursday, 24 September 2026**.

These are the upcoming expiries shown in the [BANKEX contract selector](https://groww.in/options/sp-bse-bankex) at the time of checking. Confirm the date displayed for your chosen contract before placing an order, especially following an exchange holiday announcement.

## Does BANKEX Have Weekly Expiry?

No. Following [SEBI’s restriction on weekly index derivatives](https://www.sebi.gov.in/sebi_data/attachdocs/oct-2024/1727786261636.pdf), effective from 20 November 2024, BSE retained weekly contracts for Sensex. BANKEX moved to monthly-only contracts.

The monthly expiry weekday also changed subsequently. From September 2025, BANKEX monthly expiry shifted from the last Tuesday to the last Thursday, as recorded in the [revised exchange expiry schedule](https://www.icicidirect.com/futures-and-options/articles/revised-expiry-days-for-nse-futures-and-options).

This is why older articles mentioning BANKEX weekly expiry or a different weekday can cause confusion.

For other index schedules, see our guides to [Nifty expiry day](https://algotest.in/blog/nifty-expiry-day/) and [Sensex expiry day](https://algotest.in/blog/sensex-expiry-day/).

## What Is the BANKEX Index?

The [BANKEX index](https://algotest.in/blog/bankex-index/) tracks a basket of banking stocks listed on the BSE. It gives traders a way to follow movements in the banking sector.

BANKEX and [BANK NIFTY](https://algotest.in/blog/bank-nifty-expiry-day/) are different indices. Their constituents and weightings can differ, and their derivatives trade on different exchanges. Similar movements in banking shares do not make their options contracts interchangeable.

The index itself does not expire. BANKEX expiry refers to the futures and options contracts linked to the index.

## BANKEX Lot Size: How Much Is One Lot?

The current BANKEX lot size is **30 units per contract**. One lot therefore represents 30 units, two lots represent 60 units, and three lots represent 90 units.

For an option buyer, the premium payable is:

**Option premium × lot size × number of lots**

Suppose a BANKEX option is priced at ₹100 per unit:

Quantity

Calculation

Premium payable

1 lot

₹100 × 30 × 1

₹3,000

2 lots

₹100 × 30 × 2

₹6,000

3 lots

₹100 × 30 × 3

₹9,000

_Illustrative amounts, excluding brokerage and other charges._

If that option’s premium falls from ₹100 to ₹80, a buyer holding one lot has a loss of ₹600 before charges: ₹20 × 30.

The capital required to sell an option is different. Sellers must maintain applicable margin, which depends on the contract and position. The premium collected is not the maximum possible loss. Check the order window for the current lot size and margin before entering a trade.

## What to Check in the BANKEX Option Chain Before Expiry

A BANKEX option chain organises call and put contracts by strike price for a selected expiry. Start by confirming the contract month; September and October options have different time remaining, even when their strike prices match.

Use this checklist when reviewing the chain and your broker’s market depth:

Field

What it helps you assess

Expiry date

Whether you have selected the intended monthly contract

[Strike price](https://algotest.in/blog/how-to-choose-the-right-strike-price/)

How the contract relates to the current BANKEX level

Last traded price (LTP)

The most recent traded premium; it may differ from an available execution price

[Open interest (OI)](https://algotest.in/blog/oi-in-options-trading/)

The number of outstanding contracts

[Volume](https://algotest.in/blog/how-to-read-volume-in-an-option-chain/)

Trading activity during the session

Bid, ask and available quantity

The prices and quantities currently available to trade

Check the display units before comparing OI or volume across platforms. High OI does not guarantee an easy exit. Compare current quotes, market depth and activity before deciding that a strike has enough liquidity.

## What Happens to BANKEX Options at Expiry?

As expiry approaches, an option has less time for the underlying index to move. Two effects deserve attention:

- **Time decay:** All else equal, the remaining time value erodes. Buying a low-priced option can still result in losing the entire premium.

- **Gamma sensitivity:** Near expiry, the delta of an at-the-money option can change rapidly as BANKEX moves. This can make a position’s response to the next index move very different from its response a few minutes earlier.

These [interactions between option Greeks](https://docs.algotest.in/financial-education/options/greek-interactions/) explain why collecting time decay also involves exposure to price movements.

At expiry, an option has no remaining time value. An in-the-money option has intrinsic value; an out-of-the-money option, or one exactly at the money at final settlement, has none.

For example, if the final BANKEX settlement value is 65,200, a 65,000 call has an intrinsic value of 200 points. With a 30-unit lot, that equals ₹6,000. This is the option’s gross settlement value; the buyer’s profit also depends on the premium paid and applicable charges.

## 5 Checks Before Trading BANKEX Expiry

### 1\. Confirm the Contract Month and Remaining Time

BANKEX expiry day does not occur every Thursday. Check the actual date on the contract, including any holiday adjustment.

If you use a trading system, confirm that its expiry selection matches the monthly contract you intend to trade. A weekday filter alone does not identify monthly expiry sessions.

### 2\. Calculate Risk in Rupees

Work out how a change in option premium affects the entire position. A ₹20 adverse premium move means ₹600 per lot, or ₹3,000 across five lots, before charges.

For [option-selling strategies,](https://algotest.in/blog/what-is-option-selling) review the loss exposure and margin of the complete position. Margin available in the account is not a substitute for a loss limit.

### 3\. Check Whether Your Order Can Be Filled

Look at both sides of the market. A quoted LTP may come from an earlier trade and may not be available for your desired quantity.

When spreads are wide or available quantity is small, entry and exit prices can differ substantially from a backtest’s assumptions. A limit order controls the price you accept, but it may remain unfilled.

### 4\. Decide How and When You Will Exit

Set your loss limit, profit-taking conditions and planned exit time before entry. Check your broker’s intraday square-off policy as well.

Stop-loss settings do not guarantee execution at the trigger price. Fast moves, gaps in quotes and insufficient liquidity can produce a worse fill, so allow for execution risk when sizing the trade.

### 5\. Test the Monthly Expiry Setup Separately

An older BANKEX strategy may have been tested when weekly contracts were available. Its results should not automatically be treated as evidence for the current monthly schedule.

AlgoTest’s [monthly-expiry documentation](https://docs.algotest.in/Time-Based-Algo-Trading/algo-trade/new-regime-template/) explains the “Include weekly expiries from previous regime” setting. Turning it off excludes historical weekly expiries while retaining monthly expiries from the earlier and newer regimes.

That setting alone does not isolate every later market change. Review the test dates too, including the September 2025 weekday change, and separate actual expiry sessions from other trading days.

Our guide to [backtesting options strategies](https://algotest.in/blog/how-to-backtest-options-trading-strategies-with-examples/) explains how to compare results across periods and assess drawdowns, trading costs and execution assumptions.
