How to Use the Lot-Size Table
Order quantity = number of lots × shares per lot
Example: the RELIANCE lot is 500 shares, so 2 lots equal 1,000 shares.
Premium: if a Reliance option trades at ₹20, one lot costs ₹20 × 500 = ₹10,000 in premium, before charges. The ₹20 is an example, not a live price.
Margin: premium, contract value and margin are three different amounts. Option sellers and futures traders pay margin, not just premium.
Risk: a small lot does not always mean low risk. Check the contract value and your possible loss before you trade.

How Does a Stock Become Eligible for NSE F&O?
NSE selects stocks using SEBI’s eligibility rules. A stock must meet all four of these:
Quarter-sigma order size is the order value needed to move a stock’s price by one-quarter of a standard deviation. It shows how deep the market is for that stock.
Meeting the rules does not start trading by itself. NSE announces each new stock through a circular, subject to SEBI approval.
When a stock leaves F&O
Exit: a stock that has been in F&O for at least six months is excluded if it fails the eligibility rules for three continuous months. Stocks can also be excluded under SEBI’s product-success framework, which checks for minimum trading activity.
Last trading date: the exchange circular sets which existing contracts keep trading and the date the exclusion takes effect.

What to Check Before Trading an F&O Stock
Liquidity: a stock can be in F&O while some of its strikes barely trade. Check the bid-ask spread, volume and open interest at your strike and expiry.
Margin: estimate it with the AlgoTest margin calculator, then confirm it in your broker’s order window.
Physical settlement: stock futures and in-the-money stock options held to expiry are settled in shares. You may have to pay the full contract value or deliver the full lot, which can be far more than the premium you paid.
Testing: include costs and slippage, and test your strategy on periods you didn’t use to build it. Practise first with paper trading before you use real money.
Test an F&O Stock on AlgoTest
AlgoTest supports stock options in its analysis and testing tools. Available stocks, expiries and historical periods vary by tool. Being in NSE’s F&O list does not automatically mean a stock is available in every AlgoTest tool, so check the instrument selector first.

Backtesting: test entry and exit rules on supported stock options using the available historical data. Coverage depends on the stock. See how to backtest options strategies for worked examples.

FAQs
How many stocks are in the NSE F&O list?
As of 21 October 2026, NSE lists 213 stocks with F&O contracts.
Based only on announced changes, the count would be 218 from 28 October. That figure counts the six additions and the Bajaj Holdings exit, and assumes all six additions clear their eligibility check. It would then be 216 from 25 November, after IEX and IREDA leave. These are calculations, not official NSE totals.
Which F&O stock has the smallest lot size?
Page Industries (PAGEIND) has the smallest October lot, at 20 shares. Vodafone Idea (IDEA) has the largest, at 71,475 shares.
Are F&O stocks the same as Nifty 50 stocks?
No. The Nifty 50 is an index of 50 companies. The F&O stocks list is a separate list and includes many companies outside the Nifty 50.
Index contracts trade in their own lots. See the Nifty lot size and Bank Nifty lot size guides.
Can I buy one share through a stock F&O contract?
No. Stock futures and options trade only in full lots. For example, one TCS lot is 225 shares.
To buy a single share, use the cash market instead.
Does an F&O ban mean a stock has been removed from F&O?
No. A ban is temporary. It applies when open positions in a stock get close to its market-wide position limit, and normal trading resumes once positions fall back.
An exclusion is different. It ends the stock’s derivatives listing, and re-entry needs a separate eligibility review.
Can an excluded stock come back to F&O?
Yes. An excluded stock can’t be considered for re-inclusion for one year.
After that, it must meet the eligibility rules for six consecutive months, and its return is subject to SEBI approval.
Where can I download NSE F&O lot sizes?
NSE’s Contract Information page has a Permitted lot size CSV download. Check the column for the contract month you plan to trade.
Lot sizes can change after a revision or a corporate action, so download a fresh copy before you rely on it.
