MCX margin is the money you must keep with your broker to open and hold a commodity futures position, or to sell options, on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX). It is a share of the contract’s value, set through MCX’s clearing corporation, and it changes with prices and volatility.

**Quick answer: MCX margin**

- Margin is a deposit for futures and sold options. It is not the price of the contract, and it is not your maximum loss.

- To estimate it, work out the contract value (quoted price × the number of quote units in one lot), then multiply by the margin rate.

- Initial margin is the higher of a minimum percentage MCX sets for each commodity or a risk-based amount worked out from recent volatility. MCX can add extreme loss, additional and delivery period margins on top.

- Margin rates differ widely. Volatile contracts like crude oil can need several times the margin rate of gold.

- Option buyers normally pay only the premium, but in-the-money options near expiry attract extra development margin.

- Keep money beyond the margin to cover mark-to-market losses and charges, and confirm the final figure with your broker.

## Contract Value vs Margin vs Premium

One lot of an MCX contract can be worth lakhs or even crores of rupees, but you do not pay that full amount to trade. Here is how the three numbers differ:

Amount

What it means

Who pays it

Contract value

The full value of the commodity in one lot

Nobody pays it upfront in futures

Margin

The deposit blocked to hold a futures position or a sold option

Futures traders and option sellers

Option premium

The price of an option, paid in full

Option buyers

To work out a contract’s value, start with its lot size.

## Types of Margin on MCX

### Initial Margin

Initial margin is the main deposit. It is the higher of two amounts:

- A minimum percentage MCX sets for each commodity and revises from time to time. For example, from October 14, 2025, the [minimum was 7% for gold and 11.5% for silver](https://www.sharekhan.com/bulletin/revision-of-initial-margin-in-gold-and-silver-mcx-289826).

- A risk-based amount that estimates how much the position could lose over a short period, based on recent volatility. This is often called the SPAN margin.

### Extreme Loss Margin (ELM)

ELM is an extra buffer for rare, very large moves. MCX’s copper specification, for example, sets it at a minimum of 1%.

### Additional or Special Margin

When prices swing hard, MCX can add extra margin on top. In February 2026, it added 3% on gold futures and 7% on silver futures, then withdrew both on February 19 after prices cooled.

### Delivery Period Margin

Gold, [silver](https://algotest.in/blog/silver-lot-size) and [copper](https://algotest.in/blog/mcx-copper-lot-size) futures settle by delivery. During the tender period before expiry, MCX charges a higher margin on open positions, which is one reason most traders exit before that period starts.

### Mark-to-Market (MTM)

Profits and losses on futures are settled every day. If losses take your balance below the required margin, you must add money, or your broker may close your position.

## How to Calculate Margin for One MCX Lot

1. Find how many quote units are in one lot. Gold Mini is quoted per 10 grams and its lot is 100 grams, so one lot holds 10 quote units.

2. Work out the contract value: quoted price × quote units in one lot.

3. Multiply the contract value by the margin rate.

For example, at ₹1,40,000 per 10 grams, one Gold Mini lot is worth ₹1,40,000 × 10 = ₹14,00,000. At a 10% margin rate, the margin is about ₹1,40,000. On top of that, keep money aside for daily MTM losses, brokerage and taxes.

Here is the same method for other contracts. The prices and margin rates are hypothetical, chosen only to show the calculation:

### Gold Margin on MCX

Gold margin rates have often been among the lower ones on MCX, because gold usually moves less than energy contracts. Even so, one standard [Gold lot](https://algotest.in/blog/gold-lot-size) is worth over a crore at current prices, so its margin runs into lakhs. Gold Mini cuts that to one-tenth, and Gold Ten and Gold Petal need far less per lot.

### Crude Oil Margin on MCX

Crude oil margin rates can be several times higher than gold’s, because crude oil prices swing more. A higher rate means each crude oil lot ties up more money compared with its value. [Crude Oil Mini](https://algotest.in/blog/crude-oil-lot-size), at one-tenth the size, needs about one-tenth the margin.

### Estimate Your Margin With the AlgoTest Margin Calculator

The worked examples show the logic. For a real estimate on MCX contracts, enter your position in the [AlgoTest margin calculator](https://algotest.in/margin-calculator), including the contract, buy or sell, the number of lots and, for options, the strike.

A hedged position usually needs less margin than an unhedged one. A sold option protected by a bought option, for example, often needs much less than the sold option alone, which is why defined-risk setups like an [iron condor](https://algotest.in/blog/iron-condor-strategy/) can be cheaper to hold than naked option selling.

## Is Intraday Margin Lower Than Overnight on MCX?

Usually not by much. Under SEBI’s margin rules, brokers must collect the upfront margin before you trade, including for intraday positions. That means the initial margin, the extreme loss margin and, for option buyers, the premium. Margins are also checked through several random snapshots during the day.

So an intraday commodity position generally needs about the same upfront margin as an overnight one. Our guide to [MIS vs NRML](https://algotest.in/blog/mis-vs-nrml/) explains the two product types.

### Why Your MCX Margin Can Change

- When the price rises, the same margin rate means more rupees per lot.

- When prices swing more, the risk-based margin rises.

- MCX can add special margins in volatile markets, like the extra gold and silver margins in February 2026.

- Near expiry, margins rise. In-the-money options attract devolvement margin, a share of the futures margin that grows each day until expiry. The exact schedule depends on the exchange and your broker.

- Delivery-settled futures carry higher margins in the tender period.

### MCX Price Band (Daily Price Limit)

MCX sets a daily price limit (DPL), often called a price band, for each futures contract. It caps how far the price can move in one day, and the limits and widening stages differ by contract.

For copper, for example, the [specification](https://www.mcxindia.com/docs/default-source/products/contract-specification/copper/copper-may-2026-contracts-onwards.pdf?sfvrsn=9b18389e_0) sets a 4% limit that can widen to 6% without a pause, then to 9% after a 15-minute cooling-off period, with further widening possible. A price band does not cap your losses over several days, so margin and stop losses still matter.

### Margin for MCX Options: Buyers vs Sellers

- Option buyers pay the full premium upfront. Near expiry, an in-the-money position starts attracting devolvement margin, so buyers may need extra funds or should exit before that point.

- Option sellers need risk-based margin, with a minimum short option margin set for each commodity. For gold, it was 7% from October 2025.

- [Option selling](https://algotest.in/blog/what-is-option-selling/) earns a limited premium but ties up far more capital. Our guide to [leverage in short options](https://algotest.in/blog/leverage-in-trading-short-options/) explains the risk in that trade-off.

### Test Your Strategy Before You Commit Margin

Margin decides how many lots you can afford. A backtest helps you see how a strategy performed in the past and how deep its drawdowns went, though it cannot predict future results. AlgoTest’s MCX backtesting covers crude oil, natural gas, gold and silver.

- Compare the strategy’s maximum drawdown with the money you hold beyond margin, so a bad run does not trigger margin calls.

- Test your exits too, such as [trailing a stop loss to break-even](https://algotest.in/blog/trail-stop-loss-to-break-even-price-when-backtesting/).

- Each [backtest](https://algotest.in/feature/backtest) report, one of the most detailed available to Indian options traders, shows P&L, win rate, risk-reward ratio, maximum drawdown, streaks, Monte Carlo analysis and trade logs.

### Plan Margin Into Every MCX Trade

Margin is the entry ticket, not the limit of your risk. Before each trade, know the contract value, estimate the margin, keep extra cash for bad days and decide your exit. Then test how the strategy holds up across calm and volatile months before you trade it live.

[AlgoTest](https://algotest.in/register?utm_source=blogs&utm_medium=organics&utm_campaign=seo&utm_source=blogs&utm_medium=organics&utm_campaign=seo) helps you move from an idea to a strategy you can inspect and test before deciding whether to deploy.

### FAQs

#### What is MCX margin?

MCX margin is the deposit you keep with your broker to hold a commodity futures position or a sold option on MCX. It is a share of the contract value and changes with prices and volatility.

#### How is MCX margin calculated?

Work out the contract value by multiplying the quoted price by the number of quote units in one lot, then multiply by the margin rate. For a live estimate, enter the position in the [AlgoTest margin calculator](https://algotest.in/margin-calculator) and confirm it with your broker.

#### How much margin is required for 1 lot of gold on MCX?

It depends on the price and the margin rate that day. At ₹1,40,000 per 10 grams and a hypothetical 10% rate, one Gold Mini lot worth ₹14,00,000 needs about ₹1,40,000, and one Gold (1 kg) lot about ₹14,00,000.

#### How much margin is required for crude oil on MCX?

At ₹9,500 per barrel, one Crude Oil lot is worth ₹9,50,000. At a hypothetical 30% rate, the margin is about ₹2,85,000, and one Crude Oil Mini lot needs about ₹28,500. Crude oil rates are often higher than gold’s because crude oil is more volatile.

#### Is MCX intraday margin lower than overnight margin?

Generally not by much. Brokers must collect the upfront margin before you trade, including for intraday positions.

#### Why did my MCX margin increase?

Margin can rise when prices move up, when volatility rises, when MCX adds special margins, or as a contract nears expiry and its tender period.

#### What is the price band on MCX?

The price band, or daily price limit, caps how far a futures price can move in one day. The limit and how it widens differ by contract. For copper, it starts at 4% and can widen to 6% and then 9%.

#### Do option buyers need margin on MCX?

Normally no. Option buyers pay the premium. Near expiry, in-the-money options start attracting devolvement margin, so buyers may need extra funds.
