Stock Market Holidays 2026 Falling on Weekends
Four listed occasions fall on a weekend, separate from the 16 weekday closures.
Exchanges occasionally announce special live sessions on weekends. A mock trading exercise is not a live session, so check the notice before treating a weekend as tradeable.

Muhurat Trading 2026
Date: Sunday, 8 November 2026. Timings: to be notified by exchange circular.
Muhurat trading is a special session on Diwali Laxmi Pujan marking the start of the new Samvat year. It runs despite 8 November being both a Sunday and a listed trading holiday.
It is a live session with real price discovery and execution. Even a small token order is subject to normal matching and liquidity conditions; submitting it does not guarantee a fill.
Confirm the 2026 circular and your broker's participation before setting order timings.
Note that Tuesday, 10 November is a separate weekday holiday for Diwali-Balipratipada.
Holidays by Segment
The equity list is not the whole calendar.
Equity and equity derivatives: the 16 weekday closures above.
NSE currency derivatives: the equity holidays plus four additional weekday closures: 19 February, 19 March, 1 April and 26 August 2026. These cover Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, Gudi Padwa, annual bank closing and Id-E-Milad, respectively.
Commodity derivatives: trading splits into morning and evening sessions. On some holidays only the morning session closes while the evening session trades. Check the specific date.

Trading Holiday vs Settlement Holiday vs Bank Holiday

If you sell shares near a holiday, check the settlement schedule before assuming proceeds are withdrawable on a given date.
SIP instalments: check the fund's business-day calendar and applicable cut-off rules. The NAV depends on when the transaction and funds meet those rules, so the next business day's NAV is not automatic.

What Happens If an F&O Expiry Falls on a Holiday?

NSE holidays 2026, BSE holidays and the next share market holiday. Full trading calendar, Muhurat session date and which F&O expiries shift.
For Nifty weekly and monthly options, an expiry that falls on a trading holiday moves to the previous trading day.
For example, Tuesday, 20 October 2026 is Dussehra, so that week’s Nifty expiry would move to Monday, 19 October under the current rules. Check the expiry date displayed for your contract before placing a trade.
This matters if your strategy trades on a fixed weekday. A Tuesday-only entry rule could miss the Monday expiry. When backtesting your options strategy, look at past holiday weeks and check when the strategy actually entered and exited.
If you plan to keep positions open through the holiday, review your position size and available margin. These risk management checks matter because you cannot exit while the market is closed.
Conclusion
Check the calendar for the segment you trade rather than the equity list alone, and confirm the listed contract when a holiday lands near expiry. Review your entry and exit rules against the revised dates before deploying a strategy.
